Six hidden places to let you disconnect in Cabo de Gata

Little known and isolated, this small and narrow cove of just over 100 meters in length is located near La Fabriquilla beach (Faro road, about 300 meters from the locality). Access is difficult on foot as you have to go down a small steep cliff and  it is not suitable for everybody. You can also swim or kayak from La Fabriquilla Beach.

Once down, you will have the privilege of finding one of the least crowded beaches on the coast. It is a cove without any type of service. It is susceptible to the west wind and it is highly recommended to see the sunset from this cove. Turquoise waters and volcanic formations of great beauty will make for a a great day at the beach.

2 CALA ARENA

Located in a privileged setting, this beautiful cove of fine golden sand is located in Punta Baja, to the left of the famous Sirens Reef. Its access, although on foot, is simple and can be reached by following the path that connects the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse with Cala Rajá and the Finger Reef.

This cove is small (no more than 40 meters long by 10 wide) and its peculiarity lies in the rock formations by which it is surrounded, which are column-shaped (columnar disjunction) and which were once used as paving stones and streets. Cala Arena is a place that looks like a scene from another planet and sometimes gives the sensation of seeming “pixelated”,…it seems that nature has perfected the rocks in such a way that it has perfectly created hexagonal shapes that, as indicated above, are presented in columns resulting from the rapid cooling of the lava during the formation process of the volcanic ecoregion of Cabo de Gata.

It is susceptible to the east wind. Whilst you are here snorkelling should be an absolute MUST on your visit to the Park.

3 CALA PALMITO

Little known in comparison to the coves with which it shares access. It is located to the right of the Cala del Barronal and to get there you will have to climb behind the Monsul sand dune/Duna de Monsúl (always remembering to avoid the sandy part of this dune and try to walk along the rocky side). Once you can see the cove, the descent is short, but quite steep and care needs to be taken

It´s sand is fine and golden and one of it´s main characteristics is that it has yellow rock in its central area.

Completely isolated from all human activity, on your right you will discover wonderful natural pools and caves. This cove is protected from the east wind and usually has calm waters.

Wild, remote and one of the most isolated in the Park. This cove is located at the foot of Cerro de la Polacra and is mainly made up of pebbles and boulders (reminiscent of its connections to it´s mining past, since this is where the boats were loaded with the stone extracted from nearby quarries). Quiet and protected from the east wind, it is ideal for outdoor lovers and adventurers. Its waters are crystal clear and its marine life is an explosion of shapes and colours. To access the cove you can can take the road leading to the Polcara Lighthouse (the lighthouse located at the highest point in the Mediterranean), you then leave this road and take a path to the right where you can park your car and continue on foot for about 20/25 minutes until reaching the Cala del Carnaje. Keep your eye out for the solitary palm trees that decorate this beach.

Totally virgin and surrounded by large formations of volcanic rock and strata, this cove has relatively easy access. From Genoveses Bay you take the path leading to the Morrón (a large mound located at the southern end of this bay). Before starting to climb the slope, you turn right. Firstly you will encounter the Cala de los Amarillos sandwiched between ochre-colored cliffs, continue on this path for about 30 meters following until you reach a fork where you will take the path to the left that runs through rocky terrain and along the edge of the cliff (this section requires attention and care). Once you have crossed the first section, you can already see Cala del Príncipe and its characteristic longitudinal dune and old lava flows falling into the sea. All you have to do now is go down and enjoy yourselves!

This cove has no type of service and is affected to a greater extent by the west wind.

This cove is located on one of the least explored stretches of the coast due to its long profile and many cliffs. The cove is located in the area known as Loma Pelada and is reached by using a long path that takes approximately 1 hour and connects Los Escullos with Cala Higuera and San José.

To reach it, use the  bentonite mining operation (it stands out for its white colour). You descend into the quarry and to the right a path winds down to the bottom of a ravine from where we will begin to spot this beautiful and isolated cove, displaying natural beauty of the wildest nature in the local environment.

Kayak routes depart from the town of San José that take you to this and other coves around the cliffs of Loma Pelada.

It is a cove quite sheltered from the prevailing winds in the area. It does not offer any type of service and even the mobile signal does not reach here.
