Active tourism and ecotourism in Cabo de Gata

The Natural Park of Cabo de Gata – Níjar offers many opportunities to re charge your batteries by taking a short break or a holiday. The Guide to the Park also recommends that you do not miss the chance to enjoy some of the many different tourist experiences available to see and experience the amazing landscape of this place, which leaves an indelible imprint on your mind. The adventure is about to begin!

To take advantage of the sun and the sea, there is nothing better than enjoying a nautical experience. Cabo de Gata has some of the most outstanding sea beds of the Mediterranean, and is a popular destination for first-rate diving activities. You will find companies specialising in underwater activities in most of the villages and towns along the coast of the natural park, from San José to Carboneras, passing through Isleta del Moro, Rodalquilar, Las Negras and Agua Amarga. The dives are designed to suit all levels, from novices to experts, and are an unforgettable experience.

You don´t have to be offshore to enjoy the waters, you can also use a snorkel and mask in many of its coves, and there are also local companies that offer this activity independently or included in some other marine or nautical experience. The most common example is kayaking, many tours of which include a stop at a suitable cove to do this activity. Kayaking is also one of the most popular and fun options and is available practically whole length of the coast. Routes in semi-rigid boats (RIB) or sail boats are also available and offer the chance of taking a dip to enjoy the marine life. Another fun way to enjoy yourself is the paddle board, where you stand similar to windsurfing, but it´s a little more stable. Many of the nautical experiences are dependant on the weather conditions and so before arranging your time in the Natural park it is recommended that you liaise with local operators before planning your trip there.

Land based activities are also plentiful. Hiking is popular throughout the year, although it is recommended to avoid the summer when planning routes due to the heat and the physical difficulty. Moreover, the entire Natural Park of Cabo de Gata – Níjar is full of routes and pathways for public use, and there are several different companies also offering guided services for individuals and groups. In addition to bike rental, it is also possible to hire a local guide to take you out on mountain bike routes for groups. The 4×4 routes are also a good option as they allow you to enjoy the park’s landscapes comfortably during the course of a morning or afternoon. They are subject to strict controls to avoid damage to the ecosystem and disturbing the wildlife. It´s also possible to do some paragliding in the area.

As a highly protected natural area, all Active Tourism activities must respect strict environmental rules and regulations, so here at The guide to the Park we ask all our readers to respect these laws and pay attention to what the guides tell us during these activities. Special attention must be paid to the delicate seabed and damaging the rocky outcrops with the kayaks, be sure to walk carefully on the routes and avoid damaging the vegetation, besides not disturbing the fauna or boulders along the rocky outcrops, which are of a great Scientific and educational value. Not leaving any type of rubbish or waste is also another essential requirement.

Ecotourism. For those who participate in the conservation of nature and are interested in the natural and human heritage of Cabo de Gata, we especially recommend Ecotourism activities. With these the intention is to highlight the unique qualities of the region and open your eyes to the hidden areas you may not find on your own. Birds, vegetation, ethnographic heritage linked to life in the old farmhouses, traditional fishing and, of course, the geological riches of the region are the object of ecotourism routes by 4×4 and on foot that go far beyond just the enjoyment of the landscape. The interactions between the natural and human elements of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata – Níjar and its surroundings make of this way of life a very attractive experience.

The night time also offers various outdoor activities within the natural park. Several companies offer guided evening itineraries, and even stargazing through workshops and astronomical observation sessions which are suitable for all ages. The Cabo de Gata benefits from little or no light pollution, which together with a mild climate, make it an ideal place to enjoy astronomy without having to travel to remote places.

With all this on offer, coupled with the relaxed life and countless leisure options available … It´s impossible to get bored in Cabo de Gata!
